Draft Basic Online Safety Expectations (BOSE) Determination 2021

Once finalised, the Online Safety (Basic Online Safety Expectations) Determination 2021 will set out the expectations of the Australian Government regarding social media and other electronic and internet services under the Online Safety Act 2021.

AHISA’s submission recognises the commitment of the Australian Government to the use of its regulatory powers to protect children and young people from online harms. Building on the principles outlined in its submissions on age verification and access to online pornography and on a Restricted Access System to limit the exposure of children and young people to age-inappropriate material, AHISA’s BOSE Determination submission draws attention to evidence on the risk of harm to young people through online advertising content. It suggests that consideration be given to including specific reference to ‘third-party advertising material’ at relevant points in the Determination.
