AHISA SUBMISSION

House of Representatives Standing Committee on Employment, Education and Training

20 December 2018

Status of the teaching profession

AHISA’s submission highlights a number of areas that influence or are influenced by the status of the teaching profession in Australia, including:
  • Domestic and international pressures on teacher supply and demand
  • Negative public and policy discourse around the work of teachers and schools
  • Access to professional learning opportunities
  • The challenge of adapting schooling provision to meet the growing demand by teachers for flexible working arrangements.

AHISA argues that to improve respect for the teaching profession in Australia governments must adopt a ‘strengths-based’ approach to policy making for school education. This must begin with recognition of the professional expertise of teachers and school leaders and the development of policies and programs that seek to build on that expertise.
