AHISA SUBMISSION

House of Representatives Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs

Inquiry into online gambling and its impacts on those experiencing gambling harm

11 November 2022

As in earlier submissions relating to gambling and children and young people, AHISA highlighted evidence of the risk of harm as well as actual harm to young Australians from exposure to or participation in activities that are age-restricted or which simulate such activities. AHISA advocates that evidence of risk of harm is sufficient reason for government to take regulatory action to safeguard the wellbeing of children and young people.

AHISA presented research evidence released since mid-2018 to demonstrate that the risk of harm and actual harm to young Australians from online gambling have not abated but have intensified through the proliferation of gambling apps, promotion of gambling on social media and the introduction of gambling-like elements to digital games.
